22nd Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey

The 22nd Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey is one of the largest and longest running of its kind, exploring the retirement outlook and healthy-aging perspectives across different demographic segments. TCRS' retirement research highlights opportunities to improve retirement security for everyday people, employers, and policymakers. Conducted in late 2021, the survey included more than 10,000 adults of whom more than 5,000 are workers comprising 4,741 employed by others, 580 self-employed, and 525 unemployed by looking for work.

The SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022, a result of extensive bipartisan collaboration, represents a major milestone in enhancing retirement security. Based on the 22nd Annual Retirement Survey, Transamerica Institute and TCRS spotlight eight meaningful ways the new legislation enhances retirement security though government matching contributions, expansion of workplace retirement plan coverage, retirement plan eligibility for part-time employees, automatic enrollment and automatic escalation, emergency savings accounts, matching contributions for student loan repayments, expansion of catch-up contributions, and changes to required minimum distributions (RMDs).

Emerging From the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Compendium About U.S. Workers' Retirement Outlook

December 16, 2022

The Compendium offers demographic analyses and insights about workers by employment status (full-time vs. part-time), household income, educational attainment, urbanicity, caregiver status, LGBTQ+ status, and race/ethnicity by White, Black/African American, Hispanic, and Asian/Pacific Islander (AAPI). It offers more than 35 key indicators of retirement readiness such as access to retirement plans, emergency savings, health care savings, household retirement savings, and employment impacts from the pandemic.

Every election cycle, the Compendium also features American's perspectives on retirement security priorities for the President and Congress ranging from addressing Social Security and Medicare's funding shortfalls, expanding the Saver's Credit, supporting family caregivers, to implementing financial literacy curriculums in schools, and more.

Women face a risky retirement outlook due to societal headwinds such as the gender pay gap and time out of the workforce for parenting and caregiving. The pandemic has intensified this tenuous situation. 2022 represents the 17th consecutive year that TCRS has published research on women and retirement. Based on the 22nd Annual Retirement Survey, this report examines the experiences of women employed by for-profit companies, and the impacts of the pandemic on their health, employment, financial well-being, and retirement preparedness. It also provides actionable recommendations for women, employers, and policymakers so that current and future generations of women can achieve retirement security.

Emerging From the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Employer's Perspective

Employers are navigating post-pandemic realities and adapting to the evolving needs of employees. This research report examines the impacts of the pandemic on employers and their current HR-related business practices for a multigenerational workforce, health and welfare benefits, and retirement benefits. It offers recommendations for employers on emerging benefit offerings and business practices such as fostering an age-friendly work environment to further their DE&I efforts. 

This report is based on a survey of more than 1,800 for-profit U.S. employers conducted in late 2021 and offers comparisons by company size, including small (less than 100 employees), medium (100 to 499 employees), and large companies (500 or more employees). It also includes relevant comparisons from TCRS’ most recent survey of more than 5,000 workers in for-profit companies.
