21st Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey

Now in its 21st year, the survey is one of the largest and longest running of its kind, exploring the retirement outlook and healthy-aging perspectives across different demographic segments. TCRS' retirement research highlights opportunities to improve retirement security for everyday people, employers, and policymakers. Conducted in late 2020, the survey included more than 10,000 adults, of whom more than 3,000 are workers in for-profit companies. The research also surveyed more than 1,900 employers.

Demographic influences can profoundly affect a worker's ability to save and prepare for a financially secure retirement. 

Based on TCRS' 21st Annual Retirement Survey of Workers, A Compendium of Findings About the Retirement Outlook of U.S. Workers examines demographic influences on retirement planning-related activities and how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted workers' finances and employment. It offers 35 key indicators of retirement readiness by employment status (full-time, part-time), work arrangements (remote, in-person, hybrid), urbanicity, household income, race/ethnicity, LGBTQ+ status, and caregiver status.

Life in the COVID-19 Pandemic: Women's Health, Finances, and Retirement Outlook

Despite recent progress in gender equality, the gender pay gap and time out of the workforce for parenting and caregiving are holding women back from achieving retirement security.  

This report is the 16th consecutive year that TCRS has published research on women and retirement. It examines how women are living through the pandemic and the pandemic's impact on their health, financial well-being, and retirement preparations. It also offers recommendations for women, including employers and policymakers to improve their retirement outlook. Living in the COVID-19 Pandemic: The Health, Finances, and Retirement Prospects of Four Generations

Workers are living through a public health crisis and coping with concerns ranging from health and family to employment and finances. With the immediacy of these concerns and uncertainty about the future, it is surprising that their preparations for retirement, an abstract and distant time for many, have not been altogether forgotten. 

This report examines the experiences four generations – Generation Z, Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers – and the impacts of the pandemic on their health, employment, financial well-being, and their ability to save and invest for retirement. Navigating the Pandemic: A Survey of U.S. Employers

Employers play a vital societal role by providing employment, work experience, employee benefits, and the ability for workers to achieve financial security in retirement. A strong employee benefits package – including retirement benefits, health insurance, workplace wellness programs, and caregiver support – can create a win-win situation for employers and their employees.

As a collaboration between TCRS and nonprofit Transamerica Institute, this report examines what companies are doing differently amid the coronavirus pandemic to support their employees' health, financial security, and general well-being. It is based on a late 2020 survey of 1,903 employers at for-profit companies, with analyses by company size, including small (less than 100), medium (100 to 499), and large companies (500+ employees).
